Things to Do in Annapolis

Regardless of the type of traveler that you are, there are numerous things to see and do while visiting Annapolis. The city has a rich history and the historic district of Annapolis is a great place to walk around. In addition, there are many interesting places that are definitely worth the visit.

William Paca House & Garden is a beautifully restored 18th-century Georgian mansion. It was designed by the former Governor of Maryland, William Paca who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The house is a National Historic Landmark and the interior is furnished with period paintings and furnishings. The incredible two-acre garden surrounds the house and is restored to its original glory.

The US Naval Academy is a prestigious university run by the US Navy. All students are required to have a recommendation from either a US Congressman, US Senator, or various other high-ranking government officials. It is known for its rigorous curriculum, high standards, and long history. Education is free for students and upon their graduation, students are commissioned as officers in the US Navy. It is a school that seems to be in a league of its own. To see the “yard”, join a historical walking tour and learn from the professional guides. Also, remember to visit the museum on-site. If you visit during the academic year, you should try to time your tour with the noon formation, when all the midshipmen line up.

When visiting Annapolis, you can’t miss the beautiful waterfront area. Go to City Dock for boat watching and visit the boutiques and restaurants in this popular area. In addition to this, you can take a boat cruise and truly enjoy your time on the water. The United States Sailboat Show is held in the city each year and offers a great opportunity to see and visit a wide variety of sailboats. Annapolis is also home to the incredible 20-mile-long Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which spans the Chesapeake Bay with causeways, two high-level bridges, two tunnels, and artificial islands.

If you are looking for relaxing time outdoors, look no further than the Quiet Waters Park between the South River and Harness Creek. You can go for a walk on trails or have a picnic and enjoy the beautiful gardens, during the winter you can ice skate. The park is open daily and offers a wide range of activities for both adults and children.

Terrapin Adventures in nearby Savage, Maryland has a thrilling adventure park filled with ropes courses, ziplining, a climbing tower, a giant swing, and archery. There is something to keep everyone both entertained and active since kids as young as 5 years old can join in on the fun.

If you are traveling with kids, another fun place to visit is Eco Adventures in Millersville. Owned by Brady Barr, the host of Nat Geo WILD’s Dangerous Encounters, and his marine biologist wife Mei Len Sanchez-Barr. They offer hands-on activities like feeding frenzy tours, where you can feed and interact with animals, such as snakes, lizards, and gators.

While visiting the area, if you have a couple of extra days, you can also add a visit to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Both are nearby and will really help to make a memorable escape.
